For The Firtst Time: Kalimpong Gets Digital FM Transmitter

Good news for the artists of the hilly areas

West Bengal's picturesque town of Kalimpong is poised to receive a significant upgrade in its broadcasting infrastructure with the upcoming installation of a digital FM transmitter. The project, which is part of the Centre's Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development programme, represents an investment of Rs 3.36 crore. The foundation stone for this crucial development is expected to be laid remotely by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the ceremony scheduled for January 19, as announced by Darjeeling BJP MP Raju Bista.

Bista highlighted the long-standing need for infrastructure improvements in the region's All India Radio (AIR) facilities. In his communication to Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur, Bista emphasised the importance of upgrading Prasar Bharati assets in Kalimpong to an FM Broadcasting station. This upgrade is anticipated to significantly enhance the quality and reach of radio broadcasts in the area.

The new digital FM transmitter will not only provide Kalimpong and its neighbouring areas with crystal-clear FM programming but also play a pivotal role in fostering local talent and promoting folk artists. Bista's press release underscored the station's potential to create employment opportunities within the region, thereby contributing to local economic development.

The FM transmitter installation is part of a broader initiative to modernise broadcasting infrastructure across India. This programme aims to enhance the quality of radio and television broadcasting by incorporating advanced digital technology. The move is expected to significantly improve listener experience by providing clearer sound quality and a broader range of programming.

In recent developments, AIR Kurseong has also seen notable upgrades. Since December 2022, it has been designated as the "National Hub for Nepali News Bulletins and Programmes in India." This elevation has allowed Akashvani Kurseong to broadcast Nepali news and shows across the entire country, reaching a wider audience than ever before. The NEWS ON AIR mobile app now provides global access to Akashvani Kurseong's Nepali programming, reflecting the station's expanded reach and influence.

Bista's efforts to improve broadcasting infrastructure reflect his commitment to supporting and enhancing local media services.

Looking ahead, Bista has articulated a "greater vision" for the region's media landscape. He expressed a desire to establish a DD Gorkha channel, which would provide dedicated programming and coverage relevant to the Gorkha community. This channel aims to further enrich the media offerings available to the local population and support regional cultural
and  linguistic diversity.

Overall, the installation of the digital FM transmitter in Kalimpong marks a significant step forward in upgrading the region's broadcasting infrastructure.
